The elegant church of St. Irene greets all who sail into the big harbor on the west side of the Island of Ios.
The island is one of seven communities that have laid claim to the birthplace of Greece's most famous poet, Homer, who was born in approximately 800 B.C. It is very hard to pin down birthdays that far back, because there were no consistent calendars then.

800 B.C. is several centuries before the Old Testament was codified and even many more centuries before the namesake of the harbor church was born.

I have always felt that it adds value to approach objects and ideas from the past with as much historic perspective as you can. This feeling crossed my mind again as I approached the church and its many white- washed domes, with all the mounting visual ecstasy of St. Teresa
